چکیده

A simulation program which provides insight in the vibrational properties of resonant mass gravitational radiation antennas is developed from scratch. The requirements that are set necessitate the use of an explicit nite element kernel. Since the computational complexity of this kernel requires signi cant computing power, it is tailored for execution on parallel computer systems. After validating the physical correctness of the program, as well as the performance on distributed memory architectures, we present a number of \sample" simulation experiments to illustrate the simulation capabilities of the program. The development path of the code, consisting of problem de nition, mathematical modelling, choosing an appropriate solution method, parallelization, physical validation and performance validation, is argued to be typical for the design process of large scale complex simulation codes.

A Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves

Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

Incorporating information from source simulations into searches for gravitational-wave bursts

The detection of gravitational waves from astrophysical sources of gravitational waves is a realistic goal for the current generation of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. Short duration bursts of gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae or mergers of binary black holes may bring a wealth of astronomical and astrophysical information. The weakness of the waves and the rarity...

LASER INTERFEROMETER GRAVITATIONAL WAVE OBSERVATORY - LIGO - CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Document Type LIGO-P040050-00-Z 2004/12/31 Upper Limits from the LIGO and TAMA Detectors on the Rate of Gravitational-Wave Bursts

We report the results of the first joint search for gravitational waves by the TAMA and LIGO collaborations. We looked for millisecond-scale unmodelled gravitational-wave bursts in 473hr of coincident data collected during early 2003. No candidate signals were found. We set an upper limit of 0.12 events per day on the rate of gravitational-wave transients, at 90% confidence level. Using simulat...

End to End Simulation Program for Gravitational-Wave Detectors

Within the LIGO project, a time domain simulation program has been developed to provide an accurate description of gravitational wave detectors that use laser interferometry. The program simulates the time evolution of fields, optics, mechanical structures and control systems. The program is written in C++ and the modular design of this program makes it possible to simulate a wide variety of pr...

GravEn: Software for the simulation of gravitational wave detector network response

Physically motivated gravitational wave signals are needed in order to study the behavior and efficacy of different data analysis methods seeking their detection. GravEn, short for Gravitational-wave Engine, is a MATLAB r © software package that simulates the sampled response of a gravitational wave detector to incident gravitational waves. Incident waves can be specified in a data file or chos...

Frequency domain interferometer simulation with higher-order spatial modes

Finesse is a software simulation allowing one to compute the optical properties of laser interferometers used by interferometric gravitational-wave detectors today. This fast and versatile tool has already proven to be useful in the design and commissioning of gravitational-wave detectors. The basic algorithm of Finesse numerically computes the light amplitudes inside an interferometer using He...
